Part Number Information

Paramount tries to adhere to the particular part number conventions and schemes implemented by the manufacturer.  Sometimes we must augment the part numbers for internal and external clarification.  Here are some of the suffixes you may see along with the manufacturer's part number and a brief description of the intended or modified meaning.

  • Note: All inventory should be assumed to be Refurbished, unless the part number contains #ABA or the ^ symbol, or the product descriptions specifically contains the string (NEW)

Part Suffix Description

Refurbished Equipment falls into the following categories:

  • Excess Inventory
The computer business is competitive and people go out of business. When this happens their inventory is liquidated through auctions or large inventory clearinghouses. Paramount buys from these channels and resells the equipment after thorough testing to verify the integrity of the system. This equipment is typically in pristine condition and in its original packaging. Often there are units that are still in their original sealed packing.
  • Damaged or Traveled Box
Have you ever ordered the "wrong thing?" or, ordered the "right thing" and were shipped the "wrong thing?"  If a unit of equipment has made the trip from manufacturer to channel distribution to the end user and then sent back it is called "Traveled Box" or "Damaged Box Equipment." This equipment cannot be sold as "new." This equipment, very often, is still in the "factory sealed" packing. The box may be slightly damaged on the outside but the product inside is in perfect working condition. When the equipment arrives at Paramount it is thoroughly tested to verify integrity. Because it has never been put in service it carries the full new product warranty!
  • Open Box Return
Did you ever buy something and the product was what you thought you needed, but after you got it home it was not. So you took it back to the store and got a refund. The product still worked but you returned it because it did not fit you needs. The same thing happens with PC’s, printers, and servers. The only difference is that it cannot be sold as "new equipment." As the above is gets discounted and sold through clearinghouses that handle many manufacturers. Again, the equipment is thoroughly tested to verify integrity.
  • Demo/Trade Show
What happens to that "hot new product" you see at the trade show before you can even buy it? It becomes available as a refurbished "demo/trade show unit" when the product becomes "generally available" through normal channel distribution. Manufacturers and resellers also offer demo units to preferred customers for 30/60/90 day trials. In the event that particular unit does not fit the needs of the particular customer it is returned. These units with latest generation part numbers, cannot be sold as new and go through the same channels. Paramount buys, tests, and resells this equipment. Carrying the latest generation part numbers, demo/trade show units are barely used, set up by trained professionals, and good as new.
  • Off Lease/Trade-in Equipment
Business leases on equipment can last anywhere from a few months to a few years. We buy equipment that has been in service and then taken out of service. It can be taken out of service for every possible business reason that equipment is not needed any more. This can be a business failure, departmental change, project requirement change, or change in location just to name a few. This equipment is bought, tested and resold through Paramount.
  • End/Near End of Life
As we know the computer industry is a fast growing business with new products emerging continuously. New products come out, distributors & manufacturers need to reduce inventory and give space for newer technology. Often products are available for resale that are only a couple months old and need to be moved because of a newer model is required by a distributors. Sometimes the only difference may be a color change or a larger memory amount in a certain product. These become available for resale offering you, the consumer, a significant price cut.
